Description:This early photograph shows the busy market in Newcastle-under-Lyme. The reason for the market aquiring the name "The Stones" is evident from the cobbled foreground of the picture. The area outside The Guildhall was specially constructed to accomodate a wide market. In this photograph traders can be seen selling their wares from carts or stalls.
