Description:The teddy bear gained its name due to an story about the U.S President Theodore Roosevelt. Mr Roosevelt was invited on a bear hunt by Governor Andrew H. Longino in 1902. After he was unable to kill anything his attendants led him to a Black Bear that had been tied and clubbed, but Roosevelt refused to kill the bear deeming it unsportsmanlike. The incident soon became a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman, who started to draw the bear small and cuter. Morris Michtom saw the cartoon and designed a child’s toy around the image and as Roosevelt was commonly called ‘Teddy’ the new toy was soon named ‘Teddy’s Bear.' The teddy bears (pictured) are on loan to the museum from Mrs Blackburn who collected the bears.
