Description:This photograph shows the first petrol-driven ambulance in the town, supplied by the St. John's Ambulance Brigade and the Red Cross Society. In the background you can see the local Fire Station which was located on King Street.
The Red Cross were the first organisation to supply motorised ambulances instead of horse drawn vehicles to the front during World War 1.
The lady in the photograph is Ingrid Pearce who was probably the driver of the ambulance. During the War more and more men were being called up to fight so women were trained to drive the ambulances.
This photograph is dated just after the war had ended and we wonder whether the ambulance was a vehicle no longer required for the war efforts.
