Description:Fire marks were put on buildings, so if the house caught fire the insurance company would put the fire out (buildings without a fire mark the insurance company would not interfere). The Sun Fire Office was established in London in 1710, it was one of the few insurance companies that maintained its own fire brigade. Early fire marks were made of lead and had the policy number clearly displayed at the base. Eventually the marks evolved into various shapes and designs.
