Description:The outfit is made up of a fitted bodice and skirt that when worn together appear like a dress. The heavily detailed style of the garment and lower neckline suggests it was probably an evening dress. The straight style of the dress suggest it was worn during the Edwardian period, as the bustle fashion had ended. Instead the Edwardians favoured highly detailed dresses with tight corsets to produce the S shape in women. The S-bend corset (or the health corset) was developed as it was thought to exert less pressure on the stomach, therefore decreasing injuries. However, the unnatural posture of the back overruled any health benefits from the corset. Although it can't be seen on the photograph the dress is in fact in poor condition. Silk fabric is particularly delicate and deteriorates due to light. The lace inserts on the outfit are weakening and producing holes and tears as it deteriorates causing the outfit to be in a fragile condition.
