Description:The petticoat had a dual role as underwear and a structural garment, as it helped to shape the dress and mirrored the cut of the skirt. It also protected the dress from sweat and provided the wearer with warmth and modesty (by masking the contours of the legs). This petticoat was meant to be the top layer of underwear, as the ruffles and colour illustrate it was meant to be seen. This petticoat is an example of the shift between Victorian and Edwardian fashion trends, as during the 1890’s skirts softened and petticoats followed and often had a circular flounce at the bottom. This style would later characterise the fashion in the Edwardian era. By the late nineteenth century the petticoat became the ultimate symbol of femininity with frills and lace that would continue in the Edwardian age.
