Description:Football has been popular in Britain for centuries with the first recorded football boots in 1526 when King Henry VIII ordered new boots for his great wardrobe. In the nineteenth century the popularity of the sport increased with many people playing in their work boots. These shoes were impractical for the sport as the steel capped toe boots were heavy and offered no grip for running and kicking. This lead to the first official football boots being produced in the late nineteenth century, these were heavy and thick leather shoes that went up to the wearer’s ankle and had studs in the sole for grip. In the twentieth century football boots stayed the same as the Victorian design and it was only after the Second World War that new styles were produced. These boots appear to be early twentieth century, as they resemble the Victorian design but are not as heavy and do not encase the ankle as much giving the wearer more flexibility.
