Description:The bowler hat was originally made in 1848 and was considered sturdier than the top hat, (as it could easily be knocked off and damaged). The first bowler hat was originally made by brothers Thomas and William Bowler, who designed the hat for Lock & Co. of St. James for a customer who wanted to protect his gamekeepers from low hanging branches while on horseback. The hat was only considered a success after the customer stamped on the hat twice to test its strength. The bowler hat since became a symbol of Britishness, worn by the stereotypical British civil servant or banker with an umbrella. The bowler hat in our collection is a typical design. It is felted and has a black ribbon around the brim with a flat bow on one side.
