Description:'Peach basket' hats got their name simply because they looked like upturned fruit baskets. The first hats of this type were worn in 1908. The became popular again in the 1930s and mid-1950s. This design of hat and others like it fall out of favour during the First World War as it was seen as unpatriotic, as it was suggested the wearer was more concerned with her appearance than with the war effort. The hat is made out of black straw woven together with a black trim around the base. It has a simple decoration of pink and white ostrich feathers. We have no information about this hat so can't be sure which era it dates from at present.
