Description:The North Staffs Colliery Owners Association set up their first mines rescue station, in a converted house at Stoke in 1911.
This was not long after the Coal Mines Act was passed; meaning that it was their duty to provide and maintain rescue apparatus and a rescue team in case of emergencies in the mines.
Walter Clifford (seen here under the Rescue Station sign) was appointed as the first Chief Superintendent.
