Description:During the First World War Police Officer numbers gradually reduced as former servicemen were recalled and others enlisted. Local men volunteered to become Special Constables to fill the shortfall. Most of the men would have already had a full-time job, or would have been retired. William Wilshaw was a full-time baker, he can be seen on this photograph on the second row, fourth from the right. Chief Constable William Forster sits with his 'Special Police Force' on the second row from the front, sixth from the left wearing a police helmet.
