Description:A view of a typical rainy Newcastle Carnival with the Town crier Frank Shufflebotham walking up front. The procession is turning into North Street from West Street. The police officers are members of Staffordshire Police's Mounted Branch: on the left is PC Neil Perry and on the right is PC John Fallows.

Newcastle Carnival became an annual event after the octocentenary carnival celebrations of 1973. The carnival was always held on the last Bank Holiday Monday in May and included a procession through the town, charity stalls, fun fair, and many live music performances. The carnivals stopped taking place in around 2006.
