Description:A general view of Butterton village with local children pictured in the street.

Butterton village has its origins in Saxon times when clearings were made in the Lyme Forest to create settlements. The village grew progressively as a farming community and in the 16th century the Swinnerton family acquired land at Butterton. They built a Hall on the land and later the estate became the main employer of local people.

The Hall built by the Swinnerton family was replaced in 1850 by a new Hall and by this time the estate had passed to the Pilkington family. This new Hall was however demolished in the 1920s.
