Description:The custom of well dressing can be traced back hundreds of years. Originally the wells were decorated by throwing wreaths and flowers into the water. However in about 1818 a clay-covered board was used, which enabled flower pictures to be created, and it is this method that is still used. The pictures usually have a religious subject and must only be made by using materials of a natural origin. They are constructed by pressing petals, leaves, grasses and so on, onto a wooden screen that has been covered with a soft moist clay.
