Date:25th of December 1911

Description:This photograph was taken after the rescue of some pit ponies that had been trapped underground for 21 days. Two underground explosions occurred on the 25th November 1911 killing 6 men and 27 ponies. These ponies were the lucky ones who were rescued.

The man in the center holding the two ponies is Richard (Dick) Farr from Macclesfield seen here working down the pit when he was 22 years old. Richards job was "Colliery Horse Keeper Below Ground” he died 1965 aged 76.
Richard Farr's father in law William Pitt also worked at the pit at this time, he died in 1922 ( still working down the mine) aged 68 .

Jamage Colliery was part of the Bignall Hill Collieries and was closed in 1948. Horses were used for haulage underground
