Description:This view, taken down Lower Street looking south, has been greatly changed. This photograph was clearly taken before work began on turning Lower Street into a dual carriageway, as part of the by-pass Newcastle.
The Gasometer can clearly be seen, with the roofs of the sheds at the cattle market visible in front of it. The building in the centre of the photograph with a pyramidal hipped roof is that of the Methodist Chapel. The chapel was built as a Wesleyan Chapel in 1799, but in 1863 it was sold to the United Methodist Free Church. This site has now been completely redeveloped with the Midway car park and offices.
