Description:The Primitive Methodist Chapel was built in 1841 and opened in 1860. It had to be partially rebuilt in 1882 due to storm damage. It was built to commemorate the beginnings of Primitive Methodism which began in 1807, when Hugh Bourne held an open-air prayer meeting on the slopes of Mow Cop. Many people still meet on the hill to celebrate the origin of the denomination.

Primitive Methodism is a movement founded by William Clowes and Hugh Bourne and is rooted in working class values and trade unionism. The belief is centred on reviving the Christian faith and the idea that God's love is for all, especially the poor.
