Description:This is a picture of Stanley Birks (right) and Reginald Tivey (middle) pointing their rifles at the camera before going off to war in 1914. Reginald Tivey was an elephant hunter in Africa before joining the 9th North Staffordshire Regiment in 1914. He was made officer in 1917 and served in France and Flanders before being severely wounded in his right leg by shrapnel and taken home to England. In 1919 he married Katie Birks, the daughter of the ceramics artist Alboin Birks and sister to Stanley Birks.
