Description:This is a photograph of D Company, 5th North Staffordshire Regiment at Butterton Hall for basic training during World War One. Stanley Birks (3rd row back and 7th from the left) was the son of Alboin Birks, the ceramics artist. Butterton Hall had fallen into disrepair over the years and the damage it took from being a military training base meant that is was demolished in 1924.
