Description:This hard paste famille verte (from the French ‘Green family’), deep plate is characterised by its decorative colour scheme that includes blues, reds and mainly greens and was produced primarily during the period of the Chinese Emperor K’ang Hsi/Kangxi of the Qing dynasty, who reigned from 1661 to 1722.
Patterns were often influenced by Chinese life, mythology and natural elements such as flowers, birds and butterflies, but also subjects were chosen for auspicious reasons; to ward against bad luck or encourage good fortune and wealth.
This plate forms part of collection donated by Clarice Shorter in 1965. Clarice was a well known ceramic artist from the 1920s onwards and is better known as Clarice Cliff.
