Description:The First World War tank and the Crimean War cannon were presented to Newcastle-under-Lyme as remembrances of two great conflicts. The cannon was presented to the Borough by Samuel Christie MP sometime in the 1860s, after the Crimean War, and now stands outside the Brampton Museum and Art Gallery. The decommissioned tank was presented to Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1919. 264 such tanks were distributed throughout Great Britain as a national thanks for fundraising efforts and became symbols of victory. However, many were removed in the 1930s and 40s as public opinion fell and scrap metal was needed to fuel the war effort of the Second World War. The Newcastle-under-Lyme tank is believed to have been scrapped in 1940.
