Date:20th of September 1837

Description:The Municipal Corporations Act, 1835 regulated local authorities.
Before the act a small number of burgesses chose the councillors and local magistrates (someone who administered the law).
From 1835 taxpayers elected councillors and the Crown appointed the magistrates.
Boroughs lost their right to hold ‘quarter sessions’ courts. Quarter sessions were the magistrates’ courts in which the more serious cases were tried by jury.

The burgesses accepted the 1835 act but petitioned for the right to hold quarter sessions.
This charter recognises the acceptance of the Municipal Corporations Act and allows the borough a court of quarter sessions.
A ‘borough recorder’ was the judge.
