Description:Red Lion Square was once the centre of Newcastle-under-Lyme's trade, always distinguished by the backdrop of St Giles' tower. Over the years the square has been home to public houses, such as the Globe Inn and the Three Tuns and various shops, like Wains chemists and later the Gourmet Cookshop as can be seen in this picture.

in the 1960s, a bypass was constructed, lessening the volume of traffic moving through the square and many of the shops were also demolished for the benefit of the York Place Shopping Centre. The square itself was incorporated into the high street.
