Description:The Sisters of Mercy were founded by an Irish Catholic called Catherine McAuley in Dublin in 1831. She dedicated her life and inheritance to helping the poor.

This particular convent was founded in 1937 at 21, Silverdale Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme and was known as St Joseph's Convent. It was an extension to the one founded in Newcastle-under Lyme in 1847. There were two other classrooms in the main building along with cloakrooms, an office, a kitchen, a chapel and the nuns' accommodation. Today (in 2024) the building is used as offices.
