Description:The Bull’s Head, now (2024) the Old Bull’s Head, is a timber framed building on Lad Lane, Newcastle-under-Lyme and its core is thought to date to the early 17th century. Prior to being a public house it may have been a dwelling. Records show that in 1734 the public house was kept by Thomas Beardmore. By 1782 the landlord was Thomas Carr who rented the pub from Newcastle Corporation. The building was sold at auction in 1799 to John Carr, a hatter. Over two hundred years later in 1964 the Old Bull’s Head was threatened with closure as part of the Borough Council’s redevelopment plan for the town centre. Fortunately the pub was saved after many protests and is now a listed building.
