Description:The Co-operative Group has a long history. It began in 1844 with the Rochdale Pioneers in Lancashire. A co-operative society is owned and run by its members, who share the profits, and aimed to provide good quality products at fair prices, especially for members who got exclusive discounts. This idea is now used in supermarkets worldwide with membership reward cards.

In 1863, independent co-operatives formed The Co-operative Wholesale Society (CWS), supplying products to many Co-operative stores. By the 1970s, they sold a wide range of products. This site in Newcastle-under-Lyme was vacated in the early 1980s.
