Description:Kimonos were adopted from China in the early fifth century and have since been greatly altered by Japanese fashion trends. The strict customs surrounding kimonos has resulted in the establishment of licenced professional kimono dressers in Japan. There are at least eleven different styles of kimono that should only be worn in certain settings. Traditionally kimonos were made by hand and even with the introduction of sewing machines hand sewing was still required, thus a complete kimono outfit can still cost over twenty thousand pounds. This kimono is beautifully decorated with dragons and the green fabric in itself is striking. The sleeves are wrist length and the kimono would likely have trailed on the floor as is the typical style of a woman’s kimono. These simple touches give it a more feminine appearance and mark the subtle differences between men’s and women’s kimono. We haven't been able to date this kimono exactly but it was made in the 20th century, and was likely bought back to the UK as a souvenir.
