Description:The Castle Hotel opened in around 1820 and was a popular coaching stop for traffic to and from Liverpool and Manchester, before the arrival of the railways.
Castle Hotel had to close as a licensed premises after the opening of the M6. The towns magistrates would only grant a licence for the then new Post House, if the Castle was de-licensed. The building still existed in 2002 having been, amongst other things, Tescos and a shoe shop.
