Description:This photograph was taken before 1900, when the trams were introduced to Newcastle, and tram lines ran down High Street. Traders are shown here selling their wares from carts on the ancient market.

The tall building pictured on the left is the covered market hall, which was built in 1854, in order to supplement the portable street markets that took place outside, and was demolished in 1961. This site was the entrance to the Warner Brothers cinema in 2002. The building to the right of the Market Hall was once the Market Inn and was taken over by Woolworths, who were still trading in the new building they built on the site in 2002.

The origin of the name of the Market, the 'Stones', is due to the cobbled nature of the surface of the road, clearly seen here.
