Date:1960
Description:A very busy Red Lion Square before the construction of the by-pass, when traffic flowed freely through the centre of the town. The view is looking down towards Bridge Street and Liverpool Road. The Globe Hotel is seen on the right hand side here. The building pictured was built in 1898 by Samuel Wilton and replaced a Georgian building. The Globe Hotel and adjacent buildings were demolished in the mid 1960's and a new block of shops built in there place, with Bookland being the first to open on 14th December 1967. Wain's chemist can be seen on the left hand side of this photograph.
