Date:20th of September 1837
Description:The Municipal Corporations Act was passed during the reign of King William IV. He died on 20 June 1837, three months before Newcastle’s charter was issued on 20 September 1837. Look closely and you will see the name ‘William’ has been erased and ‘Victoria’ written in its place. This may have been because Royal stationery was expensive or Victoria’s stationery hadn’t been produced at that point. Digitisation project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
